Everyone remembers where they were and exactly what they were doing when September 11th happened. Well, that’s how I feel about my first tattoo. I remember I was in Sierra Vista, AZ and I was 17 just out of high school trying to take on the world. I don’t know why I wanted a tattoo so badly, but I don’t regret one minute under the needle since! So, now here I am, 25 years old with 13 tattoos…and loving every minute of it!
My first tattoo was in the first place most girls get their first tattoo-on my lower back. It didn’t mean anything really to me at the time except that I was doing something “rebellious”. I never thought that tattoos would eventually be telling my life story. Tattoos have come to sum up an entire chapter of my life in one piece! Over the last 8 years, I’ve had a lot of experiences and needed a way to remember those times and keeping a diary wasn’t my style. After my first tattoo, came my second and third and so on, each one telling a story about who I was at that time. Eventually, they all just started to come together and meaning more and more to me.
It’s funny when I tell people about my tattoos. Some people give me looks like I have 6 heads and the “why would you do such horrible things to your body?” responses. I don’t look at them as horrible things that I’ll regret when I’m old, I look at them as art and some kick ass stories I’ll tell my children and grandchildren!
I envy women who can stand against the stereotypical version that society has painted for us and express themselves through stories on their body. I’m not an activist, but I just respect the idea of strong women who break the mold. Tattoo’s are, in my opinion, the sexiest thing anyone could do to themselves. I support anyone who wants to tell a story through tattoos. It’s an amazing form of expression that dates back thousands of years. It was used as symbolism for status of warriors and great men, so why are people with tattoos today not considered to be as great? The pain that we endure to get the artwork to tell the story is definitely worth the status of greatness!!
