To be honest, I haven't a whimsical story behind why I get tattooed. I always knew I wanted to partake, I also knew I had to be 18. As soon as I was old enough, I went in to a place and there were two artists there. Equipped with only my debit card and determination, I asked for some "sacred art". They tilted their heads, and gave me a book, but I already knew what I wanted. A crown with a banner and some stars around it. The artists either thought I was cute, or dumb, or both! They chuckled and one said, "what you want is traditional". Oh yeah, ok! I got that tattoo that day, and have continued to get tattooed until the present. That first tattoo was something I wanted, for me, and I didn't care what anyone thought. It's empowering to get that first one.
I tend to go to local parlors, and most recently, Chas Byasee, and Jason Grant have been the artists I frequent. Chas really stays true to what I ask for, as far as subject matter, color and placement are concerned, and he's extremely skilled. Jason can visualize my concept, and freehand it right in front of me, all within a few minutes.
I enjoy bold, vibrant images. Tattoos for me are fun, expressive, and not taken too seriously. My son had a role to play in some of them. He loves space movies and toys, The day the earth stood still, ET, Star Wars, hence the rocket ship, raygun, flying saucer, and robot (all Chas). Jason put my son's name in script on the back of my neck, which is my favorite of all. He also tattooed the straight razor on my left arm. My affinity for collecting items I love, I've noticed, is carried over onto my skin as well. Whether it be lipstick, a high heel, or xray specs, I'm not trying to make a statement, just purely expressing myself in a pleasant, light way. I plan to keep adding to my collection, and I am always thinking of new tattoos I want, my next one might be a jawa, not sure.
I believe at times people think they need a reason to get tattooed, somehow justifying it, considering the stigma and/or what your mom will say! I'm an avid believer in that you don't need a reason, just get tattooed!
