July '09 Skin&Ink Doll

Christine

“My body is my canvas and with the combination of skin and ink, it becomes this unique piece of art that will live on with me till I die.”  Tattoos to me have been a huge extension of my love for art and creativity.  I have always been into art ever since the time I was in preschool and they were giving out awards to the kids who could draw within the lines. First place was a crayola art set and washable tattoos.  I used to place the tattoos on my hands and face.  I think from having washable tattoos and crayola markers was the beginning of my curiosity with having art on my skin. At the age of fifteen, I had decided to take one of my drawings and have it tattooed on my back.  It was such an amazing feeling to have a piece of my art on my body.  From then on I was addicted to designing my own tattoos.  To me it was allowing my art and ideas to live on through skin.   Though not all my tattoos on my body are tied together in meaning, they all signify different times in my life that had importance to me.  And with luck and deepest gratitude I have found an amazing tattoo artist that has brought my ideas to life on my skin, and has really given me such appreciation for the art of tattoos.  Michael Banuelos, from Arcadia CA, has done 75% of the tattoos on my body and will eventually complete my sleeve on my left arm.  After meeting Michael I totally believe that a talented tattoo artists really makes the experience you have with tattoos.  Without him, I could not bring my ideas to life.
My tattoos have allowed me to have my art live upon my skin and that has been an amazing fulfillment to my life.  The only negative affect my tattoos have given me has been with my parents, who are extremely against any body modification, and swore that I would never get a job with tattoos.  Luckily as I am studying to be a nurse, (which I will finish in half a year. Yippie)  I have been working at a few hospitals that are open and accepting to tattoos, and do not frown upon them.  Which I hope is a good sign that no matter what we’ve tattooed on our skin, it doesn’t determine the person we are and our potential for greatness and professionalism.  Though I do keep my long sleeved jackets and tattoo cover up handy at all times, I am happy to not always have to use them.
After I graduate Nursing school, I hope to start my back piece to signify the event.
